Motorcycle theft is a serious issue all over the world. Tens of thousands of bikes are stolen every year and most of the stolen bikes are never recovered. 75 bikes and scooters are stolen each day. In 2016, 27,213 powered two-wheelers (PTWs) were taken from their rightful owners in the UK. Only two out of five were recovered. Motorcycle owners have to be careful and take anti-theft measures because their beloved two-wheelers are one of the favorite targets of the thieves. Because of being rather easy to steal compared to cars and other vehicles, motorcycles are often targeted by the thieves and organized crime gangs. These motorcycles are even used to commit crimes afterward. There are essentially two types of motorcycle thieves:

-Those who see an opportunity to steal a bike on the spot – and then do
-Those who target specific bikes or owners in advance and approach the theft strategically.

Both types of theft are committed by different types of criminals and there are certain countermeasures that can prevent the thieves from getting away with your bike. Motorcycle owners aren't totally helpless against theft; GPS tracking technology can help owners keep their bike and ensure its security. All motorcycle owners should opt in to install a GPS tracker because of the increasing rate of bike thefts. Installing a permanent, hidden GPS device on a motorbike could mean that the police will track it down in minutes instead of days, weeks or never. Motorcycle GPS tracking devices are getting more affordable and reliable every day. Nobody likes to think about the unpleasant idea of having their motorcycle stolen. But it’s much better to plan ahead with effective anti-theft measures rather than hope things work out after it’s too late.

There are common prevention tips before resorting to GPS because most of the bikes stolen are due to the owners lack of caution or attention. Many own motorcycles not only for the cost or convenience but also because of an emotional connection or sense of adventure associated with being out in the open on the road. Therefore, it doesn't hurt to be overly cautious about your bike.

Here are some ideas to think about as you plan how to protect your motorcycle:

Lock your ignition and remove the key.
Lock your bike to a stationary post or railing.
Use another type of lock, like a disk lock or kill switch.
Look for spots to park your bike that are very visible.
Park your bike within sight and distance of a security camera.
Keep all your papers (registration, motorcycle insurance card) on you, rather than with the bike.
When parking in a garage, block your motorcycle in with a car. Don't forget to secure the garage.

At the end of the day, all it takes is a moment of opportunity or a dedicated thief targeting your motorcycle. Having multiple locks, security measures and a motorcycle tracker not only guarantee the security of your motorcycle, but it will also give peace of mind so that you can focus on your daily tasks.
